Ngoc is 8 years old and in grade 2. She lives with her mother and young sister Linh, who is 1 year old. Ngoc's father died in 1998 and her mum got married again, however the new husband is not often home (just once or twice per month) as he has another family. He has never supported them with money. They have a certificate of the poor. Their kitchen is in poor condition and they have no toilet. The mothers occupation is listed as a farmer.
